School is beginning soon and the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce Education Committee’s seventh annual school supply drive is well underway in its effort to help local students.
“No student should be without the necessary school supplies to help them succeed,” said Ilene Martzen, Chamber board chair. “We’re grateful each year to the generosity of so many who make this annual program succeed.”
The annual school supply drive gets started in early July, just as most students are busily enjoying their summer vacation. There are six elementary, four middle and two high schools in the greater Citrus Heights area.
Martzen told The Sentinel that the Chamber contacts all schools in the greater Citrus Heights area each year to determine each school’s individual needs. A representative is then assigned to pick up the amount of school supplies the Chamber allocates to each school.
“We also received $450 worth of supplies from the members of Curves, including much-needed backpacks, filled to the hilt,” she said. “Members of the Citrus Heights Soccer Club gave a $250 check towards the purchase of school supplies.”
Needed items include #2 pencils, backpacks, Kleenex, colored markers (regular and narrow point), dry erase markers, colored pencils, crayons (16 count), highlighters, pocket folders, college rule spiral bound notebooks, blue, black and red ballpoint pens, heavy duty, top loading sheet protectors, student scissors, clipboards, glue sticks, zippered pencil pouches, copy paper and composition books (lined and graph).
Donations in the form of a gift card or certificate towards the purchase of school supplies are also welcome, Martzen said. Personal checks should be made payable to the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce.
School supplies can be dropped off through Sept. 20 at the Citrus Heights Chamber’s Office at 7920 Alta Sunrise Drive, Suite 100, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those seeking more information are invited to call the Chamber at (916) 722-4545.
