The Citrus Heights Police Department is deploying additional officers throughout the month of December to discourage impaired driving during the holiday season.
According to a press release, officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The enforcement efforts are a part of a national campaign from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, with funding provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“We want everyone to enjoy the holidays and being responsible plays a major part in that,” Police Sgt. Shaun Gualco said. “The danger is clear so before you head out for a party, make sure you have a safe way to get home.”
The press release also says that alcohol is not the only substance that can affect driving ability. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair drivers.
Police encourage designating a sober driver when making plans to consume alcohol or taking any drugs that can impair.
