During the City Council’s first meeting of 2020, city leaders will recognize Jeannie Bruins for her service as the city’s mayor in 2019, along with hear an update on future plans for Sunrise Mall and make appointments to various boards and committees
Here’s a brief summary of what’s included on the 32-page agenda packet for the Jan. 9, 2020, council meeting:
Recognition. The council meeting is slated to begin with an official recognition of Jeannie Bruins for her service as the city’s mayor over the prior 12 months. She was replaced by Jeff Slowey during the council’s last meeting in December. The council annually selects a member from among its ranks to serve as mayor for a one-year term.
Senior Housing. The council will hold a routine second reading of an ordinance approved by the council in December, paving way for a new 110-unit low income senior housing project to be built at 12057 Fair Oaks Blvd. The council voted 4-0 in favor of approving the project on Dec. 12, with Councilman Bret Daniels absent from the meeting. Public Hearings. None
Sunrise Mall plan. The city will consider voting to allocate a total of $436,658.46 to the city’s development fund for the purpose of funding the development of a Specific Plan for Sunrise Mall. Funds come from “sewer credits,” which were established in 1999 to provide a discount on sewer impact fees for residential and commercial development. The city was initially allocated 1,206 credits by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District, with each credit worth $1,426. The city has just under 300 credits remaining, which will all be liquidated to help fund the development of the plan for the mall. Board Appointments. As happens each January, the council will vote to appoint members from among their ranks to serve on various regional boards and committees. A list of appointees is included in the agenda packet.
Department Reports. The City Council will hear a report from the community development department regarding the Sunrise Mall Specific Plan. The police department is also slated to give an update on its Youth And Family Program.
Future Agenda Items. A “Kindergarten To College Education Program” is listed in a rarely used “future agenda items” section of the agenda, which is a place for council members to request items be put on the agenda. The item was brought forward previously by Councilman Bret Daniels who said he is proposing a similar program as has been implemented in other cities. The program involves a 529 college savings plan being set up for each student, using either public funds or through a partnership with private entities.
The City Council will convene at 7 p.m. at 6360 Fountain Square Drive on Jan. 9, 2020. The full agenda packet can be viewed by clicking here.
