Due to the recent outbreaks and restrictions caused by COVID-19, the Sacramento Area Creeks Council has cancelled this year’s “Creek Week” activities, which had been scheduled for April.
Creek Week is a yearly event that involves groups of volunteers going to different creeks throughout Citrus Heights and Sacramento County to clean up any plastics or garbage in the area.
Other Creek Week events are the annual “Splash Off” and 2020 Celebration at Carmichael Park. The Council said in an update that they determined the most responsible action given current circumstances would be to cancel these events.
Organizers are currently exploring options for holding these activities this fall.
“We thank our sponsors whose financial contributions, in-kind goods and services, and indispensable volunteers are what allow us to provide such a wonderful event year-after-year,” said Creek Week Chair Alta Tura in an email update shared with The Sentinel.
The Council said much of its sponsor funding has already been used for outreach and promotional items, but the nonprofit is offering to return any sponsor funds, if requested.
In an update posted on social media Friday, Creek Week organizers encouraged community members to continue involvement in year-round action to protect creeks and rivers, despite the annual event being cancelled: “We can all make a difference by practicing random acts of cleanup—by picking up one extra piece of trash each day, the results can be profound and far-reaching.”
