Sunrise MarketPlace will be holding a “Turkey and Fixins” food drive in the Birdcage shopping plaza this Saturday to provide Thanksgiving dinners to families in need.
Partnering with KHITS and the Sunrise Christian Food Ministry (SCFM), the MarketPlace says donations will be accepted in the parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shopping center is located at 5975 Birdcage Centre Ln., off Sunrise Boulevard.
Kathilynn Carpenter, executive director of the Sunrise MarketPlace, said SCFM distributed 2,000 turkeys, and expects that need will “significantly increase” this year due to heightened unemployment during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We saw a need here and hope the community will help us to fill the huge food insecurity gap this season,” said Carpenter.
Donations are encouraged to be purchased from local grocery stores within the Sunrise MarketPlace business district. A flier lists the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Sunrise Boulevard., the Target store on Sunrise Blvd., the Smart and Final on Madison Avenue, and the Sprouts store on Greenback Lane.
Frozen turkey, canned vegetables, rolls, and boxed sides are needed, as well as canned cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, bagged potatoes and beans, canned fruit, and other items for a Thanksgiving meal.
Sunrise MarketPlace is a business improvement district made up of 400-plus restaurants and stores in the Sunrise-Greenback commercial corridor, including the Sunrise Mall.
