A 39-year-old man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting last week turned himself in to authorities Wednesday.
Jose Maldonado, 39, turned himself in at the Sacramento County main jail and was arrested for the murder of 41-year-old Gersain Trenado Orozco, according to a press release Wednesday. A warrant had already been obtained for his arrest, based on witness statements, forensic analysis and “numerous pieces of evidence,” police said.
Authorities believe Maldonado shot Orozco after Orozco shot and killed another man, 29-year-old Felix Maldonado Garcia, at Fair Oaks Park during an April 18 incident.
Garcia was originally identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office as 30 year-old Jesus Mejia Cruz, but officials later clarified that the incorrect name had been released based on inaccurate DMV records, according to The Sacramento Bee. The deceased man’s family provided documentation to the coroner’s office confirming the proper name, The Bee reported.
Police say Garcia was shot to death while playing soccer or volleyball at Fair Oaks Park. His death is listed at 6:58 p.m., on April 18, according to coroner’s records.
Nine minutes later, records show Orozco was killed across the street from the park, on Madison Avenue just east of Ventana Place. Police believe Orozco is the person who killed Garcia and then fled across the street before being gunned down by Maldonado.
Police offered thanks to the local community for support and cooperation in investigating the shooting and also noted appreciation for “the ongoing regional partnership with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office whom we routinely collaborate with during serious criminal investigations.”
