Citrus Heights residents could have the choice of a 6th Starbucks location within city limits, if a development proposal currently being considered by the city receives approval.
The planned 2,241-square-foot building would be constructed at 8550 Auburn Blvd., along with a 400-square-foot patio. A site plan filed with the city shows a double drive-thru with room for about 17 vehicles, along with 38 parking spots.
The plan calls for the demolition of Java Detour, a small coffee kiosk, as well as the 1,450-square-foot Sam’s Liquor and Food to make room for the drive-thru which wraps around the proposed building. Existing businesses, Waggin’ Tails Doggie Day Car and “Tea It,” would remain, according to the proposal.
The liquor store was built in 1960 and is detached from the main building, although both structures share a roof. A breezeway separates the liquor store from the rest of the complex.
A total of three separate parcels are included in the plan, according to a document filed with the city. The northern border for the site is the county line with Placer County immediately to the north.
Starbucks currently has five locations in Citrus Heights, with the most recent location opening last month in a new building at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue. The Sentinel previously reported the company’s location in the Barnes and Noble at Birdcage Marketplace abruptly closed just before the holidays in late 2021.
Documents filed with the city show the developer for the proposed Auburn Boulevard site is listed as West Sacramento-based Coastal Star Partners LLC, which has ties to Engstrom Properties Inc., also based in West Sacramento.
A company representative contacted by phone Tuesday did not return The Sentinel’s request for comment by press time Wednesday night.
A representative for the adjacent ‘Tea it’ cafe next door declined to comment for this story, while a manager for Java Detour said she felt it was unfair for a big chain to come in and demolish a small business.
Documents posted on the city’s website show the proposal was submitted on April 21 and is currently listed as “under review.”
