Through Aug. 12, residents in Citrus Heights have the opportunity to file to run for a seat on seven different governing boards this year, including city council, fire district, water district, school board, community college board, and the utility district board.
Citrus Heights City Council: Three of the council’s five seats are up for election this November for the newly created District 2, District 4 and District 5 seats. The positions are all four-year terms. Residents must registered to vote and live within the boundaries of the district seat being sought. (see map)

Citrus Heights Water District: Two of the three positions on the local water district’s board of directors are up for election. Each director represents a different portion of the district — and some areas of the city are covered by the neighboring districts. The District 2 and District 3 seats are both four-year terms. Compensation is not listed on the web page for the district’s governing board, but annual pay with benefits for each director totaled between $8,400 to $10,800, according to the most recent data for 2020 posted at publicpay.ca.gov.
San Juan Unified School District: Five seats on the recently expanded seven-member school board are up for election this year. The seats are four-year terms. Citrus Heights residents will have the chance to potentially occupy up to four seat on the board, with Area 7 covering most of the city and portions of areas 4, 5 and 6 also including portions of Citrus Heights. Elected board members are paid $787.50 each month and may also participate in the district’s health insurance plans, according to the school district’s website.
San Juan Water District: Citrus Heights residents can also run for a seat on the five-member San Juan Water District, which supplies water to CHWD and other water districts in the area. Divisions 1, 3 and 5 are up for election. The divisions each cover portions of Citrus Heights, with some areas of the city being outside the district’s boundaries. (See map)
Annual pay with benefits for each director totaled between $6,000 to $15,000, according to the most recent data for 2020 posted at publicpay.ca.gov.
Los Rios Community College District: Areas 1, 2 and 6 are up for election this year. Area 2 is the only seat on the governing board covering Citrus Heights, currently represented by Robert Jones. (See website, map)
Annual pay including benefits for each elected trustee totaled between $12,500 to $28,500, according to the most recent data for 2020 posted at publicpay.ca.gov.
Metro Fire District board: Four board positions are up for election on Metro Fire’s governing board, including the Division 3 seat which covers part of Citrus Heights and is currently held by Randall Orzalli. (See website)
Annual pay including benefits for each elected member totaled between $2,000 to $4,000, according to the most recent data for 2020 posted at publicpay.ca.gov.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District: SMUD’s Ward 1 position is up for election this year, representing Citrus Heights on the seven-member board. The position is a four-year term and is currently held by Brandon Rose. (See website)
Annual compensation for each ward member totaled between $24,000 to $36,000, according to the most recent data for 2019 posted at publicpay.ca.gov.
The deadline to file paperwork to run for elected positions this year Aug. 12, unless the incumbent doesn’t file — which extends the deadline by five days. More information and paperwork needed to run for office can be found on the City Clerk’s website and the Sacramento County Elections website.
