Sentinel staff report–
Live entertainment, food trucks, and a fireworks show are coming to Citrus Heights on July 1, as the city announces plans for its first-ever “Stars & Stripes Celebration” at Van Maren Park.
According to a news release from the city, the family-friendly event will be open to the public and is slated to begin at 6 p.m., with local band CC Seger performing from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and a fireworks show at 9:45 p.m. A Kid’s Zone will also be available for children.
“Enjoy the views from the park, with your family and community nearby. Sit back, watch the sky light up and remember all that the holiday is meant to celebrate: our country, community and togetherness,” the city said in its May 5 news release.
The City Council in January voted 3-2 to approve spending up to $80,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for the patriotic event, citing interest in community-building events and noting demand for bringing back a popular fireworks show that was held for many years at Sunrise Mall.
The council was split on whether to include the fireworks show with the event, as feedback received from the public noted concern for pets and veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder who can be negatively affected by the loud sounds of fireworks.
Van Maren Park is located a block away from City Hall, at 6601 Thalia Way.
