A pair of burglars, apparently short on supplies like gloves, tools and knives, were arrested early Thursday morning after reportedly breaking into the Bargain Smart store on Auburn Boulevard.

Police credited the arrests to a quick-responding witness who called police while the incident was in progress. Neighbors also reportedly assisted officers in locating the suspects.

Bargain Smart owner Rodney Smith told The Sentinel in a phone call Thursday that he was at home when the incident occurred in the early morning hours. Smith said he called police when his security camera system alerted him of activity at the business.

“The police pretty much had them cornered and they started jumping fences,” he said, describing the presence of multiple police vehicles. “They had them surrounded.”

The suspects were prepared with bolt cutters and wearing backpacks, according to Smith. Their vehicle, a newer model Mercedes, was impounded.

Smith called the thieves “the dullest tool in the shed,” and thanked police for their quick response. He also said he’s “happy to own a business in Citrus Heights,” despite there having been prior break-ins at his business and a neighboring car wash in recent months.

Bargain Smart is located at 7501 Auburn Blvd. and prominently advertises on its signage that it sells gloves, tools and knives. The store also carries miscellaneous other items.
