A 20-year-old Citrus Heights man was one of five people injured in a deadly collision involving three vehicles on U.S. Highway 50 Thursday.
SouthTahoeNow reported the collision occurred just after 5 p.m. on July 22. The Citrus Heights man was driving a Chevrolet Equinox when a woman from Sparks, Nevada driving a Saturn Vue lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with the Equinox, the news outlet reported.
The driver of the Saturn died at the scene, after she was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision. All five occupants of the Equinox were age 20 or under, and were transported from the scene with major injuries.
The Equinox caught fire after the collision but the flames were extinguished by passers-by at the scene, the report said. Another vehicle was also involved in the collision, after the Saturn severed into two pieces and hit the third vehicle.
Speed appears to be a factor in the collision, as the California Highway Patrol reported witnesses saw the driver of the Saturn Vue traveling at a high rate of speed and aggressively passing other vehicles prior to the collision.
