An apartment fire near Sunrise Mall on Tuesday night left one man in critical condition and two other people injured.

Metro Fire Capt. Parker Wilborn told The Sentinel at the scene that crews responded to a structure fire on the second floor of a building in the Sunrise Center apartment complex just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Crews found one person in the apartment and Citrus Heights Police assisted in removing the victim from the unit, Wilborn said. Two other people were treated for injuries and released, according to authorities.

The fire was contained to one apartment unit, and Wilborn said he expects residents in neighboring units will be able to return home once crews clear the scene. The cause of the fire has not been determined and an arson investigator was on scene.

“The crews did an excellent job of isolating the fire to that single unit,” Wilborn said. “The fire could have spread laterally and affected multiple units.”

In an update by phone Wednesday morning Wilborn said the man in critical condition had been transported from Mercy San Juan to UC Davis Medical Center, but he did not have a further update on the man’s status.

Sunrise Center Apartments are located at 5849 Sunrise Vista Drive, in Citrus Heights.
