Citrus Heights Police and General Services Department staff were kept busy over the weekend as heavy rains and wind caused roadway flooding and took down a power line. An intersection outage and reports of at least one home flooding and a vehicle partially submerged in water were also among calls police responded to.

The storm, dubbed a “Bomb Cyclone” by meteorologists, impacted the state causing localized flooding in several areas of the Central Valley. A record-setting amount of rain, 5.44 inches, dropped in Sacramento during a 24 hour period on Sunday, the National Weather Service reported.

Citrus Heights Police Lt. Michael Wells said officers responded to over 20 incidents with roadway flooding. Sylvan Road was closed when Arcade Creek crested, and one call related to a house flooding when the caller’s pump lost power, he said.

A list of incidents provided by police shows a live main power line went down at Pennington Way and Vista Ridge Drive. Power was also lost at Antelope Road and Sunrise Boulevard with signal lights flashing at the intersection.

Sand bags at City Hall were provided to residents in advance of the storm, and Wells said police took measures ahead of the storm to move transients out of creek areas prone to flooding.

“Patrol teams pro-actively conducted a city wide sweep of Arcade Creek to encourage transients to seek higher ground or shelter in other locations for potential flood dangers,” Wells said.

A Sentinel reporter passed one vehicle stuck in mud along Auburn Boulevard. The driver, who did not want to be identified, said the vehicle’s brakes were not working and the car was out of control. The driver and his son were uninjured. It took a pair of tow trucks several hours to get the vehicle back on the road, he said.
