CHPD warns of drunk driving in advance of Super Bowl

Sentinel staff report–
The Citrus Heights Police Department in a news release Wednesday warned of the dangers of drunk driving and encouraged Super Bowl fans to plan ahead.

“If you are planning to be away from home during the Super Bowl, make a game plan to ensure you don’t find yourself without a designated driver if you need one,” said Traffic Lieut. Jason Baldwin. “Remind your friends and family: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.”

Among tips offered by police, the department advised party hosts and attendees to make sure designated drivers are “actually sober,” and to call a ride if the designated driver has been drinking. Police also encourage party hosts to make sure to plan ahead and provide nonalcoholic drinks for sober drivers.

Other tips from the department include:

  • Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or a ride service to get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact the Citrus Heights Police Department.
  • Do you have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.

The department said more than 10,000 people were killed in drunk driving collisions in 2019, and also warned that those caught driving while intoxicated can face jail time, loss of driving privileges, and up to $10,000 in fines, attorney fees and other costs.
