A three-hour standoff in a Citrus Heights neighborhood involving an armed man with a hammer ended with an arrest Friday night.

Police Sgt. Bill Dunning told The Sentinel police responded to the 7800 block of Sampolo Court for a report of a domestic disturbance involving an adult male threatening family members with a hammer.

Family members left the home and police attempted to de-escalate the situation using less-than-lethal force, Dunning said. The incident was resolved after officers entered the home and the man was detained with the help of a police K9.

Witnesses reported a heavy police presence in the area of Sampolo Court and Jamestree Way. A helicopter could be heard circling overhead in the area during the incident.

The man was treated at a local hospital for a dog bite before being transported to jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, and resisting arrest, police said.
