Sentinel staff report–
Firefighters in 100 degree heat on Monday worked to extinguish a fire behind Walmart in Citrus Heights that involved multiple large bales of cardboard on fire, as well as a grass fire.

Metro Fire Battalion Chief Mike Johnson told The Sentinel in an interview on scene that the incident was reported around 2:20 p.m. on July 18. Crews were still on scene at 3:30 p.m., utilizing a forklift and hand tools to pull apart partially burned cardboard bales and soak them with fire hoses.

Johnson said crews were able to stop the grass fire from progressing eastward where he said it would have threatened an apartment complex. Nearby grass, brush and trees could be seen with fire damage following the incident.

Several storage containers were also damaged in the fire, Metro Fire said. No injuries were reported and the cause of fire was not immediately known.

The incident occurred on the southeastern side of the Walmart store at 7010 Auburn Blvd., in a paved area where pallets, cardboard bales and storage containers are located.
