As of Monday, residents can file to run for three of the five seats on the Citrus Heights City Council, with nomination paperwork being accepted through Aug. 12 for the upcoming November election.
The City Council seats for districts two, four, and five are up for election on Nov. 8 this year, each serving a four-year term. The seats are currently held by Mayor Porsche Middleton, and council members Jeannie Bruins and Steve Miller. Bruins has announced she is retiring from her position and will not seek reelection.
Up until the filing deadline, prospective candidates may make an appointment with the city clerk and pick up a candidate nomination packet. Appointments can be made on the city’s website, and more information regarding the election process can be found there as well. Questions can also be emailed to the city clerk at CityClerk@citrusheights.net or directed by phone to (916) 727-4704.
During the nomination period, prospective candidates are required collect at least 20 signatures from registered voters within their district, nominating the candidate for City Council.
Candidates are also required to be at least 18 years old, US citizens, and residents of California. They are also required to be registered voters and residents within the district in which they are seeking to be elected. Further requirements are detailed in the “Guide to Running for Local Office,” published by the city.
An interactive map showing boundary lines for the city’s new council districts can be found on the city’s website. Council seats used to be elected city-wide, but began being conducted by district in 2020.
