The Citrus Heights Police Department’s Animal Services Division is helping local residents keep their pets safe through three free pet microchipping events. The first microchipping event for pet owners is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15. at 7569 Old Auburn Rd. in Citrus Heights.
Mayor Jayna Karpinski-Costa announced the launch of the “Chip Chip Hooray,” free microchipping initiative during the Citrus Heights State of the City address in early November. The community outreach efforts aim to make it easier for Citrus Heights pets to be reunited to their owners if they become lost.
The first Chip Chip Hooray microchipping event will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, and the city strongly encourages residents not to park in other business parking lots, except the parking lot of 7569 Old Auburn Rd.
The event will provide free microchipping for dogs and cats who live within city limits. Proof of residency in Citrus Heights is required, but there is no cost for the service. Licensing information will also be available during the events.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned home, and microchipped cats are twenty times more likely to make it back to their families.
Two more events are also scheduled in December and January at the following locations:
- Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025
6510 Antelope Rd. (near Stones Gambling Hall)
- Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026
7000 Auburn Blvd. (near Costco)
Pet owners should bring proof of residency in Citrus Heights (such as a driver’s license or utility bill). Dogs should be leashed, and cats should be secured in a carrier for their safety.
