Sentinel staff report–
The Citrus Heights City Council on Wednesday unanimously selected a new mayor and vice mayor from among their ranks to serve one-year terms in 2026.

Outgoing Mayor Jayna Karpinski-Costa, who served one year and three months after former Mayor Bret Daniels resigned his seat, handed over the gavel to MariJane Lopez-Taff at the start of the Dec. 1o City Council meeting, with the two the swapping seats as well as titles. Councilmember Porsche Middleton was also selected as Vice Mayor.

Outgoing mayor Karpinski-Costa previously served as Vice Mayor before being voted in as mayor following Daniels’ abrupt resignation in 2024. During the last council meeting in 2024, she was reconfirmed as mayor for the following year.

Karpinski-Costa also served as mayor in 2011 during a prior term on the council. She later left the council, but returned in 2022 after being elected to the District 4 seat. Her four-year term expires in 2026.

Middleton has previously served as mayor and vice mayor. Middleton was elected to the City Council in 2018 and was re-elected in November 2022 to represent City Council District 5. Her term also expires in 2026.
