Guest Column: A Letter from the Mayor

By MariJane Lopez-Taff–
Dear Citrus Heights Residents,

It is an honor to serve as your newly appointed Mayor. As I begin this year of leadership, I am proud to introduce my mayoral focus: Citrus Heights Serves.

Service and volunteerism have always been at the heart of our community. Every day, residents show up for one another by coaching youth teams, checking on neighbors, supporting local nonprofits, beautifying our neighborhoods, and giving their time in ways that often go unrecognized. This year, Citrus Heights Serves is about honoring that spirit of service and intentionally connecting it to the future we are building together.

Service is not separate from good government—it is a vital part of it. When residents engage and volunteer, they help advance the City’s Strategic Goals by supporting public safety, caring for our infrastructure, strengthening our local economy, and fostering meaningful community engagement. Service builds trust, resilience, and pride in our city.

Throughout the year, the City Council highlights different ways residents serve—from neighborhood cleanups and public safety programs to youth leadership, senior support, and partnerships with local nonprofits. We will also celebrate the volunteers whose contributions often go unseen but make a lasting impact on Citrus Heights.

Citrus Heights Serves is also a call to action. I invite every resident to consider how you can serve—whether by volunteering with a local organization, participating in a community event, or simply lending a hand to a neighbor. No act of service is too small when it strengthens our community.

If you are already serving, thank you. I encourage you to stay connected and invite others to join you. If you are looking for ways to get involved, the City will continue expanding opportunities for service, volunteerism, and civic engagement throughout the year.
