What was initially reported as a robbery with the brandishing of a firearm in broad daylight near a local park on Friday evening was later determined by police to be a staged scenario created for social media.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Citrus Heights Police Department, officers received reports of a robbery on Friday evening involving individuals wearing masks and displaying what appeared to be a firearm. Police radio communications during the incident indicated that the incident took place near Rusch Park but not inside Rusch Park.
Three subjects were detained at the scene.
Police said in the social media statement that one individual was found in possession of a replica handgun equipped with a drum-style magazine, which officers noted appeared highly realistic. Another subject was found carrying live ammunition.
After investigating, officers determined the group had staged the robbery as part of a social media prank. Authorities confirmed no actual robbery had taken place.
“Pranks that simulate crimes or involve weapons can quickly escalate, create fear, and lead to serious legal consequences and outcomes,” police said, adding that the incident generated “significant community concern.”
One of the three individuals was arrested for possessing an imitation firearm in public and for an outstanding warrant, authorities said.
“Please think before you film,” the department said in a social media post. “Public safety always comes first. No amount of likes, clicks or money is worth losing your life.”
Police did not release the names of those involved.
