A new thrift store offering items for only a dollar each held a soft opening in Citrus Heights on Friday.

The thrift shop, called Dollar Thrift, used to be located at 5338 Auburn Blvd., between Garfield Avenue and Hemlock Street, the store’s owner, Melissa Jones, confirmed.

Jones said the concept for a thrift store that offers every item for one dollar came to her while she was hosting a garage sale. Jones said she has five kids and saw first-hand the value of helping out other families like hers by offering items for a dollar.

Dollar Thrift has been in business for 10 years, Jones said. The previous space was very small in comparison to the new location, with multiple bags of thrift items piled high behind the register’s counter, waiting to be stocked on the floor.

The new location for the store, at 7811 Lichen Drive in Citrus Heights, has an open and spacious interior, with rows of adult clothing, tall bins of kids clothing. and shelving along the walls with purses and bags, kids’ shoes, adult shoes, and houseware items.

Each item inside the store is sold for a dollar.

During the soft opening on March 20, many customers could be seen creating giant piles of items near the front of the store. Only a few had baskets or carts. Jones said customers would also try to do the same thing at the previous location, but the space was often cramped.

Jones said the store takes donations, and for every 10 items donated, the person donating will receive credit for one item in the store.

No sign is on the building’s front facade yet, but Jones said a sign has been ordered. The store is located behind Wendy’s off Antelope Road, at 7811 Lichen Drive.

Dollar Thrift is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sundays.
