A July 3 shooting at an apartment complex in Elk Grove left one man dead and a suspect briefly on the loose. Two days after the shooting, police announced 27-year-old Michael Jones, from Citrus Heights, had been arrested after a local hospital reported a man had arrived for treatment of several gunshot wounds.

According to an Elk Grove Police Department news release issued on July 5, officials said the shooting had occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of Avery Gardens Apartments on the 7500 block of Elk Grove Blvd. Responding officers found a deceased man in a parked vehicle and a subsequent investigation led detectives to later identify Jones as the suspect responsible for the shooting death.

After being contacted by police at the hospital and “medically cleared for incarceration,” officials said Jones was arrested for murder and taken to the Sacramento County Jail.

Additional details were not released by police and the name of the man who was killed has not been released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
