Sentinel staff report–
Two people were killed and two more were hospitalized after a head-on collision occurred Thursday evening near the intersection of Auburn Boulevard and Greenback Lane.
Citrus Heights police said several 9-1-1 calls were received shortly after 8 p.m. on April 23 regarding the collision. Responding officers found a truck and SUV with major damage in the roadway.
Emergency personnel declared two dead at the scene and two others were hospitalized with “major injuries,” but are expected to survive, police said.
“Based on witness information, it is believed that the SUV traveling westbound crossed over the center divider and collided head-on with a truck traveling eastbound on Auburn Blvd,” police said in a news release issued after the incident. “We are early in our investigation, but it appears that speed may have been a factor.”
The collision resulted in the closure of all lanes of traffic on Auburn Boulevard for several hours, as the department’s Traffic Unit conducted an investigation of the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office had not released the names of the deceased, as of 9 a.m. Friday.
Police said drivers are reminded to be “attentive to the roadway and other motorists.” Any witnesses to Thursday’s collision are asked to contact the police department’s non-emergency line at (916) 727-5500.
