Sentinel staff report– Four Citrus Heights residents out of a pool of a 13 applicants will be selected by the City Council on Thursday to join the city’s seven-member Planning Commission.
Tim Schaefer and Bret Daniels, who won their races for City Council in November, will each nominate a member of the Planning Commission, subject to ratification by their colleagues. Two additional at-large members will be chosen by the council as a whole.
Daniels previously had one of his nominees, James Remick, rejected by the council in 2017 — starting off his rocky relationship with the council for the past four years. Remick is among the applicants who applied this year as well.
At-large members of the commission serve two-year terms, while regular members serve four-year terms. Only one current member of the commission, Thomas Scheeler, has reapplied, meaning the commission will see at least three new faces this year.
Applicants are listed below:
- Talaya Turner Mike
- Robert Giovati
- Michael Nishimura
- Tracy Ewing
- David Hall
- Thomas Scheeler
- Marcus Bergman
- Michael Retzlaff
- Kody Tickner
- James Remick
- Paul Makhnovskiy
- Douglas Broomell
The City Clerk later confirmed on Monday that business owner Kevin Miles, Jr., will also be considered during the meeting. She said his name was “inadvertently omitted” from the council’s agenda packet posted online.
Copies of each resident’s application were not included in the Jan. 14 City Council agenda packet published on the city website, but a staff report for the agenda item said applications and links to video interviews were provided to each council member.
Two of the applicants, Marcus Bergman and Paul Makhnovskiy, also applied for a seat on the five-member Construction Board of Appeals. Three seats on the board are up for appointment, so recruitment for the position will remain open until filled.
The Jan. 14 council meeting will be held online via Zoom, with members of the public able to comment by using the “hand raise” function or dialing *9 if joining by telephone. Written comments up to 250 words can also be submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org and will be read aloud during the meeting.
