Sentinel staff report–
The City of Citrus Heights will hold a public workshop on March 3 at City Hall where community members will have an opportunity to provide input on how boundaries for the city’s five council districts should be drawn.
The workshop will be held on Thursday, March 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 6360 Fountain Square Drive. A posting on the city’s website says says attendees “will have an opportunity to learn more about the redistricting process, review current district compositions, and provide feedback on where district lines should be drawn.”
The workshop comes amid a series of public hearings, legally required to be held, as the council considers redrawing district lines to account for demographic changes documented in the 2020 US Census. As previously reported, a city-hired demographer says the current district boundaries meet legal requirements, meaning the council could adopt the same map without changes.
Several council members have expressed support for keeping the district map the same, while Councilman Bret Daniels recently proposed considering adjusting District 5’s boundaries to reflect expected population increases due to the 260-unit Mitchell Village development and housing potential in Sunrise Mall redevelopment plans.
The council has held two public hearings on redistricting so far and will hold two more public hearings on March 10 and March 24. Draft alternative maps are expected to be released prior to the March 10 meeting.
