Sentinel staff report–
Southbound lanes on Sunrise Boulevard near Antelope Road were shut down for several hours Friday evening as police investigated the scene of a collision involving a bicyclist who was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
Police said in a news release that the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on July 22, involving an adult male bicyclist who was hit by a vehicle. As of 10 p.m. Friday, police said the bicyclist’s condition “remains critical.”
Sgt. Janet Schaefer told The Sentinel at the scene that the 62-year-old bicyclist was crossing Sunrise Boulevard when he was hit by a sedan. The bicyclist was not in a crosswalk and was not wearing a helmet, she said.
Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene until police arrived and was cooperative. One direction of Sunrise Boulevard was closed for about three hours, from Twin Oaks Avenue to Antelope Road, prompting many drivers to use Mariposa Avenue as a detour route.
Police said in Friday’s statement that the incident remains under investigation and involvement of alcohol or drugs is not yet known. The statement also urged bicyclists to “use designated bike lanes and cross streets in designated crosswalks.”
In 2017, a fatal collision involving a pedestrian occurred on the same stretch of Sunrise Boulevard, between Twin Oaks and Antelope Road. Police said the pedestrian in that incident was crossing Sunrise Boulevard near Stanford Avenue, outside of a crosswalk.
