Five families are left searching for a place to stay after a fire on Tuesday heavily damaged several units in the apartment building they each shared.
Metro Fire Captain Parker Wilbourn said three units sustained major damage with the other two sustaining moderate damage. No injuries were reported, Wilbourn said.
The fire started just before 5 p.m. on Aug. 23 at an apartment building at 7524 Pratt Ave., near Auburn Boulevard. The fire traveled along a space between the roof and ceiling for the entire length of the single-story, five unit building, Wilbourn said.
Wilbourn could not say what caused the fire, and arson crews were at the scene along with multiple Citrus Heights police vehicles. The fire traveled through a small space between the ceiling and roof of the building, Wilbourn said.
“Very extensive, very labor intensive operation, especially with 104 degree heat right now,” Wilbourn said at the scene.
David Anderson of the Red Cross confirmed five families were displaced in the incident. The Red Cross was there to assist families with temporary housing.
In total, five engines, three trucks, two battalion chiefs and one ambulance responded to the scene, according to Wilbourn.
Nearby business owner Guy Peres, of The Service Department automotive repair shop, told The Sentinel he has heard frequent yelling and screaming coming from the building and said police and fire respond to the apartment building on a weekly basis. Another resident said there’s been an ongoing dispute between residents in two separate units at the apartments.
