Coroner releases name of motorcyclist killed on Greenback Lane

By Mike Hazlip— Authorities have released the name of the motorcyclist killed in a Sept. 4 collision along Greenback Lane between Arcadia Drive and Sunrise Boulevard.

The deadly Labor Day collision took the life of 50-year-old Mathew Hubbard, Sacramento County Coroner records show. Hubbard collided with a truck at about 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, according to a prior news release by the Citrus Heights Police Department.

The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased, police said. The driver of the truck and a passenger were not injured. Police said illegal drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, but did not say whether speed was a factor.

The Coroner’s Office lists the location as “550 ft west of the intersection of Arcadia Dr & Greenback Ln.,” putting it an uncontrolled exit from the parking lot of the Citrus Town Center. Police have not released details about what caused the collision, but video from the scene by KCRA 3 shows a grey pickup truck with heavy damage to its passenger side and a red motorcycle laying in a westbound lane of traffic.

Another fatal collision also occurred on Greenback Lane outside the Citrus Town Center in 2017.

In that collision, an 88-year-old man was exiting the center and was broadsided by a truck driving westbound on Greenback Lane, according to a previous report by The Sentinel.

Kristopher Frey, a police sergeant at the time, told The Sentinel that the elderly driver had initially been sent to the hospital with unknown injuries, following the collision. A police news release several hours later stated that the man had died in the hospital.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that a two-door Acura was T-boned while attempting to cross westbound lanes of Greenback in order to turn left, while exiting the Citrus Town Center. The driver’s side door of the Acura appeared to have been directly hit in the crash, according to the 2017 report by The Sentinel.
