Citrus Heights police shut down southbound lanes of San Juan Avenue near Greenback Lane for more than six hours on Friday after a bicyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle.
Police Sgt. Seth Cimino said in an email statement on Saturday that the incident occurred on Sept. 29, with police responding to a call around 12:21 p.m. regarding a collision in the 6200 block of San Juan Avenue. Responding officers found a bicyclist “lying on the roadway with serious injuries,” he said. The bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Cimino said the driver of the vehicle involved remained on scene and was cooperative with police. The incident is still under investigation, but police say DUI does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
Posts by the Citrus Heights Police Department indicate the roadway was reopened around 7 p.m. on Friday.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released by the coroner’s office, but Alfred Sanchez, an area advocate for the unhoused, told The Sentinel that the person killed was a homeless man. As previously reported, another homeless woman was killed in a collision with a vehicle on Auburn Boulevard earlier this year on Jan. 22.
