The Citrus Heights Police Department is currently accepting applications for its Police Explorer Program. The Explorer program gives teens and young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement and is open to boys and girls ages 14 to 20.

The program is designed to educate youth by providing hands-on experience in various aspects of police work, according to the city’s website.

“We like to get them interacting with the community and other members of the police department to help build relationships for the future,” Citrus Heights Police Officer Kirk Sisson said, adding that explorers volunteer at DUI checkpoints, public events, and other community service events.

Explorers receive instruction in various areas of law enforcement, the website indicates, including criminal and traffic law, investigations, crime scene management, dispatch, accident reporting, and records handling. Explorers also take part in ride-alongs and work alongside officers and other department personnel during community events and group training exercises.

In addition to practical skills, the program emphasizes the development of leadership, discipline, and strong moral character. Many graduates go on to pursue higher education, military service, or careers in law enforcement.

Sisson said the department currently has four former Explorers with full-time positions at the police department, including one sworn police officer, two community service officers, and one code enforcement officer. Most of the former Explorers in non-sworn positions are too young for the academy or are still working toward joining one, Sisson added. The minimum age to join police academies is 21 years in California.

While the Explorer program is part of the Police Activities League program, Sisson said Citrus Heights PAL is directed more toward “fun events” for kids, with a goal of building relationships between youth and law enforcement, while the Explorer program is geared toward training kids that are interested in a career in law enforcement.

To qualify for the Explorer program, applicants must maintain at least a “C” average in school, have no criminal history, demonstrate good moral character, and also show a willingness to serve the community and actively participate in Explorer activities. A background check and oral interview are part of the selection process. The application period is currently running from May 15-June 15, the department said on social media.

The Explorer group meets twice a month and stays involved year-round through various trainings and special events. Interested youth can apply by submitting a completed application form, recent school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation to the Citrus Heights Police Department, marked to the attention of Explorer Advisors.
