While many businesses opened in Citrus Heights this year, multiple businesses have also shuttered over the past year — with a dozen of those occurring inside Sunrise Mall.
Rally’s: The drive-thru restaurant on Auburn Boulevard shuttered this year, after just three years in business. The location is now slated to become a drive-thru coffee shop, which should open in 2026.

SiteOne Stone Center: A landscape supply center on Walnut Drive, near Auburn Boulevard, closed this year. However, the company has a second location at 6325 Auburn Blvd. which remains open. The center had changed its name from A&A Stepping Stone after being acquired by SiteOne in 2022.

Macy’s: The long-time anchor of Sunrise Mall closed in March, leaving JCPenney as the only national anchor within the mall. The retail giant’s closure has resulted in the departure of almost a dozen other businesses inside the mall over the last 12 months.

Hot Topic: The pop culture clothing store shuttered only its Sunrise Mall location around the same time as Macy’s closed.

Party City: The Citrus Heights Party City in the Citrus Town Center closed sometime in March, 2025. CNN reported last year that after nearly 40 years in business, the major party retailer announced it expected to close all stores in early 2025.

Masterboy Streetstyle: The independently owned clothing shop inside Sunrise Mall closed abruptly in mid-March, leaving only a sign that informed customers of their new location in Folsom.

Spencer’s: The popular retailer with pop culture merchandise closed on April 20, 2025, after announcing its closure a month in advance. Spencer’s locations in the Galleria Mall and at Arden Fair Mall are still expected to remain open. Another Spencer’s recently opened in Elk Grove as well.

JOANN: After escaping the first round of announced closures, JOANN in Citrus Heights closed after being named on a subsequent list of hundreds of store locations expected to shutter throughout the country, following the beginning of bankruptcy proceedings.

Sam’s Jeweler’s: In July, one of many jewelry stores inside Sunrise Mall closed, and combined itself with Ron’s Jewelers in order to be in closer proximity to foot traffic generated from JCPenney.

Underground Clothing Store: Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team organizers said they could no longer afford to operate the store inside Sunrise Mall. After paying zero rent for two years, the store began to pay rent, though greatly reduced. In negotiating a new rent with Namdar Realty Group prior to the expiration of their lease, the proposed rent was expected to more than double.

Mark’s Hallmark: Several shoppers could be seen buying the last of the merchandise available on July 29, the last day of Hallmark’s operation inside Sunrise Mall. The gift shop has existed in some form inside the mall for decades.

Rental Guys: A long time family-owned equipment rental company at 7448 Auburn Blvd., once known as Aba Daba, shuttered in July. Aba Daba was officially sold to Rental Guys in May 2024 following the retirement of the owners.

Claire’s: Teen jewelry and accessories retailer Claire’s announced in August that the company planned to close 300 store locations across the country, including its location in Sunrise Mall. The company first announced it was filing for bankruptcy in early August.

Used car lot: A three-quarter-acre used car lot at the corner of Auburn Boulevard and Manzanita Avenue appeared vacant with zero activity in August. The lot had gone through multiple used car dealership business names over the years, including Julie’s Car Corner, Dream Motors, Nation’s Auto Care and 3M Motors.

The Family Outpost: A family owned thrift shop on Old Auburn Road and Sunrise Boulevard closed after one year, following the family’s decision to move out of state.

Ascension preschool: A preschool that operated in the city for decades closed this school year due to low enrollment, according to Lutheran Church of the Ascension staff. The closure was announced on the preschool’s website.

Four more mall closures: M&M Couture, Breakout, Infinity Jewelers, and Aria Furniture all vacated their spots inside Sunrise Mall at the end of March according to a nearby business owner in close proximity to the stores.

Supercuts: A hair salon on Auburn Boulevard closed in mid-November after more than 40 years in operation, according to a Dec. 8 press release. All stylists have relocated to Supercuts located at 5863 Sunrise Blvd.

Black Sails Coffee Lounge: After a brief 6-month stint in Citrus Heights at the Marketplace at Birdcage shopping center, the coffee brewing company was forced to close and relocate due to its temporary tenancy status, when the Marketplace at Birdcage secured a permanent tenant in their suite. The coffee shop’s last day was Dec. 21.
