Metro Fire Citizens Academy registration deadline approaching

By Sara Beth Williams–
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is inviting community members to take part in its upcoming Metro Fire Citizens Academy, a nine-week educational program designed to provide an inside look at the district’s emergency response operations. With the registration deadline approaching quickly, interested participants are encouraged to sign up by Jan. 15.

The Citizens Academy offers a comprehensive overview of how Metro Fire serves the region as an all-hazard fire department. Participants will learn about a wide range of critical operations, including fire suppression and rescue, water rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, and other key aspects of public safety.

In addition to hands-on learning opportunities, the program explores Metro Fire’s history and mission, giving participants the chance to hear directly from administrative and support services leaders. The academy highlights the teamwork and coordination required to deliver emergency services and protect the community.

The academy is open to community members, business owners, public figures, and government officials who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of fire and emergency services in Sacramento County.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning Feb. 4, 2026, and concluding April 15, 2026. Those wishing to participate must register by Jan. 15 to be added to the interest list.

Metro Fire officials say the program is a unique opportunity for residents to engage with first responders, build awareness of emergency operations, and gain a greater appreciation for the work done behind the scenes to keep the community safe. Interested participants can register on the district’s website.
