The Citrus Heights City Council expressed gratitude toward outgoing mayor Jayna Karpinski-Costa as they recognized her extended mayoral term during the Jan. 14 City Council meeting.

New Mayor MariJane Lopez-Taff said she was “honored” to recognize the former mayor for her hard work throughout part of 2024 and 2025.

“You have done an excellent, absolutely stellar job,” Vice Mayor Porsche Middleton said to Karpinski-Costa Wednesday night.

Other councilmembers echoed their thanks and recognized how hard it was to take over being mayor during a difficult time.

Former mayor Jayna Karpinski-Costa originally served as vice mayor in 2024 but was appointed mayor in August of 2024 following the abrupt resignation of former mayor Bret Daniels, after he announced he was moving out of state with his family and was unable to complete his term as he had initially intended.

Karpinski-Costa was then appointed mayor again for 2025, following a unanimous vote from the City Council in December 2024.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as mayor for a little over a year,” Karpinski Costa said, expressing gratitude to the council for their kind words. Karpinski-Costa added that her favorite part about being mayor was hosting Mondays with the Mayor at City Hall and being able to assist residents who needed help.

Karpinski-Costa previously served on the city council years ago before being elected again to represent District 4. Karpinski-Costa is a veterinarian by trade. Her term expires in 2026.

Lopez-Taff and Middleton were appointed as mayor and vice mayor, respectively, for a one-year term through 2026 at the Dec. 10, 2025, City Council meeting.
