Another Grocery Outlet opened in Citrus Heights on Thursday, after months of construction and weeks of preparation stocking shelves.
The new “South Citrus Heights” Grocery Outlet opened at 7 a.m. to a crowd of over 100 people, grocery store employees said Thursday morning. The store handed out mystery gift cards to the first 100 shoppers upon opening. Employees said some shoppers had set up camping chairs out in front of the store on Wednesday evening.
Later in the morning, the grocer celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting, attended by dozens of family members, friends, community members, police officers, members of the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce, and local and regional elected officials and representatives. Prior to cutting the ribbon , store owners Greg and Stephanie Ashworth donated $1,000 to the Citrus Heights Police Activities League.
The grocery chain is known for offering name-brand groceries and specialty items at steep discounts, often ranging from 40 to 7o percent below traditional retail prices, the company says.
Shoppers can expect a wide selection of fresh produce, everyday staples like eggs and milk, and a range of NOSH products, an acronym the company uses to describe natural, organic, specialty, or healthy items.
Based in Emeryville, California, Grocery Outlet operates under an independent operator model, with locally based owners managing individual stores. Currently, another independently owned store in Citrus Heights is located at 6059 Greenback Ln. on the corner of Greenback Lane and Auburn Boulevard.
The company and its subsidiaries have more than 560 stores in 16 states.
The revamped Sunrise Village shopping center has seen multiple new tenants over the last couple of years, including Club Studio Fitness, Pinkberry, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and most recently, Juice Time, an international juice and ice cream shop, which opened in January.
More new tenants have plans to open, with “Coming Soon” signage posted in the southwest corner of the plaza for a new nail spa and a new beauty professionals collective.
Amazon Fresh also opened a brick-and-mortar grocery store in late 2024, but the location closed in mid-March of this year, following the company’s announcement that all of its brick-and-mortar stores were shutting down.
The new Grocery Outlet is located at 5409 Sunrise Blvd.,
