A local mattress store will be closing soon, according to multiple sources, but the circumstances surrounding the impending closure leave more questions than answers.
Matthew’s Mattress, a family-owned mattress chain with five stores in California, is planning to close its Citrus Heights location, according to both the Sunrise MarketPlace executive director, and CBRE Senior Vice President Rick Martinez.
The mattress store remained open as of Saturday morning, April 4.
Citrus Heights Matthew’s Mattress store manager Dana Mayfield also confirmed that the store will be closing, but said she was not given a timeframe or date of closure. Mayfield, who has worked at the Citrus Heights location for four years, said the chain is reportedly possibly looking to move out of California due to the difficult business climate.
Martinez said in a phone call Tuesday CBRE is “actively seeking” to fill the space with a new tenant, but did not say whether the current tenant’s lease had run out, or whether the tenant had chosen to break their lease.
Current leasing documents shared with The Sentinel show the 3,870-square-foot freestanding building located at 8042 Greenback Ln. is for lease, and has building signage and a dedicated monument sign clearly visible along the busy boulevard.
The Sentinel reached out to the owner of Matthew’s Mattress for comment on Thursday but has not heard back.
Matthew’s Mattress first opened in 1991, and has multiple locations, including locations in Roseville, Sacramento, Cameron Park, Vacaville, and Citrus Heights. The owner of the store launched the company at only 19 years old, the store manager said, adding that she couldn’t ask for a better boss.
Over the years, the company created its own line of mattresses that offered better warranties than name-brand mattresses, Mayfield said. Matthew’s Mattress also carries name-brands alongside its own line of mattresses.
The company emphasizes a “low-pressure” sales atmosphere, Mayfield said, explaining that she would rather someone take home the right mattress the first time, rather than have them feel pressured to buy something, and then return it.
Business in the unassuming strip mall has ramped up recently, with the addition of Sweet Music Studio Cafe, a venue offering live music paired with coffee, wine, beer, and limited food options.
A Mexican restaurant within the same strip is also planning to expand its space within the next few months. The strip mall also includes an Indian restaurant and market.
Around the corner on Sunrise Vista Drive, a new set of three-story apartment buildings is under construction.
There were plans for a K-6 charter school to occupy part of the nearby 6060 Sunrise Vista office building around the corner, but those plans have not materialized.
A block down, plans for the construction of a major Sports Complex at the site of the former Macy’s Men’s building at Sunrise Mall are in the works, with the City of Citrus Heights recently signing an economic development and participation agreement with sports and entertainment venue developers The Mettle Shop.
