A cafe restaurant in Citrus Heights was forced to close temporarily following major health code violations according to a Sacramento County Environmental Management Department health inspection report.
During a Sept. 15 visit, Sacramento County health inspectors observed three live German cockroaches and one nymph on walls under three compartment sinks at Cornerstone Restaurant on San Juan Avenue, resulting in a red card issuance. During a subsequent reinspection on Sept. 18 health inspectors issued a green card, allowing the restaurant to reopen.
A red card issuance results in immediate closure of the facility until a reinspection can take place. Generally, a reinspection will occur within 24-72 hours. A green card issuance indicates that a facility has passed the health inspection.
Health inspectors cited in their initial inspection report that the walls of the facility were broken and deteriorated, with openings in several locations, allowing roaches to enter the facility.
Two dead cockroaches were also observed on the floor under three compartment sinks and many more were found behind an upright refrigerator.
The restaurant also lacked an employee with a Food Safety Certificate, which was noted as a repeated violation. As well, California Food Handler cards were expired.
Other violations included observations of deteriorated, rough flooring throughout the facility that was not up to current standards. Inspectors say the unapproved flooring needs to be replaced within 30 days.
Upon reinspection on Sept. 18, the health department noted that there were no live cockroaches observed. Walls and ceilings were observed to have been repaired and painted with approved materials. Inspectors also observed that the facility was “conducting aggressive pest control service.”
The facility was able to reopen successfully after passing the inspection. No other follow up inspections are listed on the county’s website as of this publication.
