A local shoe store located in a high-traffic area in the Marketplace at Birdcage, has permanently closed after 20 years in business.

Online maps and business listings currently show the Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse located at 6100 Birdcage Centre Ln. as permanently closed.

A visit to the shopping center Wednesday found the entrance to the shoe store taped off, with two large shipping containers out front. The inside of the store appeared vacant and cleared out of merchandise, with multiple piles of boxes seen on the inside of the empty store. The signature black, white and red lettering had also been removed from the store’s facade.

A date of closure was not immediately known, and no employees were available for comment. A sign indicating the store was closed was reportedly seen on storefront windows on Sunday, Jan. 11, according to online reports.

Sunrise MarketPlace Executive Director Kathilynn Carpenter said the shoe warehouse opened in Citrus Heights in 2006.

Off Broadway Shoes boasts offering 30,000 pairs of shoes suitable for every part of life, according to the company’s website.

Online leasing materials from CBRE hint that another shoe retailer is already reportedly interested in the space, according to a Jan. 12 repot from the Sacramento Business Journal.

Leasing documents show DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse plans to fill the 18,168-square-foot space, possibly in the summer of 2026.

DSW also operates another location on Arden Way in Sacramento.

In 2002, Rack Room Shoes purchased Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse and completed merging its operating functions with Off Broadway in 2021.
