Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is planning to open a new Citrus Heights location this year, promising “freaky fast” sandwich preparation and local delivery.
Franchisee Phil Hornstra told The Sentinel via email this week that the new location is scheduled to open in mid-September, joining the recently opened Smart & Final Extra store in the new shopping center under construction at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Hornstra said his company, “PG2H, Inc.,” currently operates a Jimmy John’s franchise that opened in Roseville last December and plans to bring another 12 sandwich shops to the area.
“We are freaky fast,” said Hornstra, asked to describe Jimmy John’s for those who haven’t visited before. “We typically will have your sandwich made and back to the register before you finish paying.”
He said the restaurant chain also features fresh-baked bread all day, with veggies prepped each morning and meats and cheeses sliced daily. Menu selections include the “Hunter’s Club,” which features a quarter-pound of medium-rare roast beef, and the 8-inch “Vito,” an Italian sub with genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato and Italian dressing. A sandwich called the “J.J. Gargantuan” promises to feed “the hungriest of humans.”
Hornstra said delivery options are available for catering orders as well as for “just one person want[ing] just one sandwich.” He said Jimmy John’s locations are known for last-minute catering and can prepare food for 100 people with less than an hour’s notice — although the company’s website says 24-hour notice is preferred.
Hornstra said the new shopping center in Citrus Heights was chosen for a Jimmy John’s location due to it being “centrally located to many retail and business options.” He said the company will hire about 30 to 35 staff members and will seek to be involved in local school events and fundraisers.
According to JimmyJohns.com, the sandwich company was founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud. After graduating second-to-last in his 1982 high school class and deciding “college was not for him,” Liautaud obtained a $25,000 loan from his father and opened his first sub shop in Charleston, Illinois. His company has since grown to nearly 2,500 locations nationwide.
The closest Jimmy John’s restaurants are located on Del Paso Road in Sacramento and Douglas Boulevard in Roseville.
