A decades-old donut shop on Auburn Boulevard has reopened with new ownership.
The shop, located at 8500 Auburn Blvd., has been in business for years and the new owners say it’s time for a change. Mike and Marady Oum said the previous owner retired after 20 years in business. The husband-and-wife team are adding modern flat screen menu boards, new equipment and a fresh coat of paint.
The couple are doing much of the work themselves, hiring out some projects like electrical work to professionals.
“We have only high school in Cambodia, so we don’t know what to do,” Mike Oum said in an interview Thursday. “We don’t want to spend more time on education because we rent an apartment, we have to pay a lot.”
With an eight-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter, the Oum’s say they moved to the United States because there are more opportunities for their children here than in their homeland.
Last weekend, the pair were seen at Rusch Park passing out free donuts to announce their shop’s opening.
In the shop, the couple work as a team with Mike doing the baking and Marady handling customer service at the front counter. Mike Oum says some early bird customers arrive at opening time, which is 4:30 a.m. on weekdays. He also has maintained some regulars from the prior ownership.
The menu offers a variety of donuts, muffins and sandwiches, along with coffee smoothies and espressos. The shop is currently open Monday-Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
