A mother and her adult son were displaced when a fire left the home damaged by smoke Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started in the garage of a home near Rusch park. The Sentinel is withholding the exact location to protect the property from looters, which has occurred at other homes following fires.
Battalion Chief Chris Reed said crews were able to knock down the fire shortly after arriving. There was no extension to the attic or other parts of the home, he said.
No one was injured in the incident. One occupant able to escape while the other was not home at the time, Reed said. Fire crews were able to move two large dogs to the back yard during the incident to keep them safe.
While the cause of the fire was not immediately known, Reed said garage fires are typically caused by vehicle fires, smoking, or electrical issues.
A woman who lived at the home but did not want to be identified said the Red Cross provided her and her family with money, but she did not yet know where she and her son will be living.
