By Mike Hazlip— The Sacramento County Coroner’s office on Wednesday released the name of a 41-year-old Citrus Heights man who was gunned down Monday on Madison Avenue after he allegedly fatally shot another man at a nearby park.
The fatal altercations began on April 18 around 6 p.m. at Fair Oaks Park where authorities said one individual was shot in the upper body by a gunman who approached a group of men playing soccer or volleyball. The person responsible for the shooting then fled the scene on foot.
Moments later, witnesses reported another shooting in front of an apartment complex in Citrus Heights, located near the park on the other side of Madison Avenue. The man killed in the second shooting, Jerzain Trenado Orozco, appears to be the person who shot the man in the park, according to initial reports.
The person who shot the man in front of the apartment complex remains at large, police say.
The first victim was pronounced dead at the scene while the Citrus Heights man was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
Citrus Heights Police Lt. Jason Baldwin told The Sentinel on Tuesday that authorities could not release any further information without jeopardizing the investigation.
“Giving that information out to the public has the potential to compromise the investigation or the officer’s pursuit,” he said.
Madison Avenue was closed for about two hours during the initial investigation, Baldwin said.
Due to the shootings happening along the border of Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks, Monday night’s shootings are being investigated separately. Citrus Heights police are handling the shooting along Madison Avenue and the Sheriff’s Department investigating the first shooting at Fair Oaks Park.
Citrus Heights residents also reported a heavy police presence on Monday night near Sylvan Corners. Baldwin said that activity involved officers conducting a follow up interview with an individual in connection to the shooting, but determined the individual was not directly involved in the incident.
