One man is dead after what police say was an exchange of gun fire between two individuals on Birdcage Street Monday night.
Citrus Heights police say officers arrived at the location after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired around 10:55 p.m. on May 23. Upon arrival, officers found a 20-year-old man in a walkway of the apartment complex who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police then found an another 20-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds inside an apartment.
The first man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, according to the release. The second man inside the apartment was pronounced dead at the scene.
Birdcage Street was closed between Greenback Lane and Farmgate Way for several hours while police conducted the investigation.
“At this time, investigators believe this is not a random act; the parties involved likely knew each other,” police said in a news release around noon Monday. The department said preliminary information shows the two men “appeared to be shooting at each other,”
Multiple agencies assisted Citrus Heights police with the closure of the roadway and traffic control, including Sacramento County Sheriff and California Highway Patrol.
Authorities ask anyone with additional information to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department Tip Line at (916) 727-5524, or the Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP.
