Sentinel staff report–
One of three Walgreens store locations in Citrus Heights will be permanently closing its doors this month.
During a visit by Sentinel staff on Feb. 15, clearance pricing, half-empty shelves, and “store closing” signs were seen at the Walgreens store at 6199 Sunrise Blvd., confirming that the store is winding down its final days of operation. Signs state the entire store will close on Feb. 20, 2024, with the pharmacy open until 3 p.m. that day.
A sign posted in the window of the building’s drive-thru pharmacy says prescription records will remain available at all Walgreens stores, including a nearby location at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Antelope Road.
As previously reported, the Walgreens store building at 6199 Sunrise Blvd. was sold in 2016 for $10.41 million. The 14,820-square-foot building was built in 2007 and is located on a two-acre parcel across from Sunrise Mall.
Walgreens announced last year that it expected to close 150 of its roughly 9,000 stores in the United States by the end of its fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2024. A report by CNN in October cited theft as well as declines in prescription sales as reasons contributing to the closures.
Other drug stores have also faced financial trouble, with Rite Aid shuttering its final location in Citrus Heights in November last year after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.
