There’s still time to see Mesa Verde High School’s spring production this March.
The spring production, “She Kills Monsters,” directed by Mesa Verde theater teacher Sean Melby, debuted on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and will continue its run through next weekend.
“She Kills Monsters” tells the story of character Agnes, who must come to grips with her younger sister Tilly’s untimely death due to a car accident. After Agnes discovers a notebook from her sister detailing a fantastical Dungeons and Dragons-esque world, Agnes embarks on a grand adventure.
The New York Times called “She Kills Monsters” the “hot school play,” noting that between 2013 and 2021, the production was performed at 652 school and college campuses. “She Kills Monsters” is rated PG-13.
The play, written by Qui Nguyen, is described as “action-packed” and “comedic” by the San Juan Unified School District and the high school’s adaptation represents the work of many Mesa Verde students who are part of the Career Technical Education Professional Theater pathway program, led by Melby. The CTE program equips students with various skills through classes that focus on set design and script-writing, among others, helping to prepare them for careers in and out of the arts.
More showtimes are scheduled next weekend, beginning with a matinee show on Wednesday, March 12, at noon. The rest of the performances will be in the evenings beginning Thursday, March 13 and running through Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6:45 p.m. in the Performance Arts Center at Mesa Verde High School. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or online here. Mesa Verde is located at 7501 Carriage Drive.
