Four arrested at latest DUI checkpoint in Citrus Heights

By Sara Beth Williams–
Four were arrested on DUI charges during the Citrus Heights Police Department’s latest DUI and driver’s license checkpoint, according to an update from the department.

The checkpoint took place last Saturday, Sept. 20 and into Sunday morning, on Sunrise Boulevard near Oak Avenue, according to police.

Officers screened 923 vehicles over the course of the evening and into early morning hours, resulting in four arrests for driving under the influence. In addition, police issued 15 citations for various violations, and four vehicles were towed.

Funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the checkpoint was part of an ongoing effort to deter impaired driving and promote road safety.

The department emphasizes that checkpoints like this are critical in helping reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes, which remain a leading cause of serious injuries and deaths on California roadways.

“The Citrus Heights Police Department urges the community to use a sober driver or a rideshare service to prevent impaired driving.” the department said in a statement, reminding the community that impaired driving is both dangerous and preventable.

While DUI checkpoints are announced in advance, locations are kept undisclosed. The department says locations are determined after analyzing data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The purpose of DUI checkpoints is to “promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.”
