The San Juan Unified School district has honored local elementary school lead custodian Mikalai Lutsyk as one of the district’s 2026 Classified Employees of the Year, an honor recognizing staff members who play a vital role in supporting student success.
Lutsyk, who has served in his role at Grand Oaks Elementary for seven years, is widely known across campus for his strong work ethic, professionalism and genuine care for the school community. Colleagues say he approaches each day with efficiency, a positive attitude and a quiet sense of humor, even when faced with unexpected challenges.
“He chooses to work at most of our events beyond school hours, and it is so wonderful to have a familiar face for our community,” his nominator wrote. “He exemplifies professionalism and excellence and is an ideal model for custodial work performance.”
While his primary role is maintaining the campus, Lutsyk’s contributions extend far beyond custodial duties. He frequently assists Slavic students and families by helping with translation and orientation, creating stronger connections between the school and its diverse community.
Despite the daily demands of maintaining a busy campus, Lutsyk takes pride in ensuring the school environment reflects a sense of care and excellence, his school says. Staff say his efforts help foster a welcoming atmosphere where students, families and employees feel comfortable and supported.
Lutsyk is one of nine individuals recognized this year as Classified Employees of the Yea. Each person was nominated by members of the San Juan Unified community for their dedication and impact.
This year’s honorees also include:
- Debbie Armstrong, nutrition services cook at Del Campo High School
- William Dreifus, technology support specialist for Technology Services
- Joseph Lausmann, operations technician for Transportation
- Cortney Lloret, instructional assistant at the Alternative Learning Center at Meraki High School
- Omar Marroquin, school community specialist at Encina High School
- Peter McGuinness, lead electrician for Maintenance and Operations
- Joanne McLaughlin Strauch, site secretary at Earl LeGette Elementary School
- Jamileh Piran, health instructional assistant for Health Services
District officials say the annual recognition highlights the essential role classified employees play in keeping schools running and supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.
San Juan Unified will be celebrating the 2026 Classified Employees of the Year, and the 2027 teachers of the year during its 13th annual Spirit of San Juan Awards on Thursday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at El Camino Fundamental High School’s Center for the Arts, located at 4300 Eastern Ave. in Sacramento.
