Citrus Heights Mayor MariJane Lopez-Taff has announced the Youth Advisory Commission will launch this coming fall.

Approved unanimously by the Citrus Heights City Council during a February City Council meeting, the 13-member commission will be open to students in grades 8 through 12 who live within city limits. The initiative is designed to give local youth a direct line to City Hall, while encouraging civic engagement and leadership development. Applications for commission positions are now being accepted through June 26.

According to the city, the commission will act as a bridge between young residents and municipal leaders. Members will advise the City Council and staff on issues impacting youth, while also offering recommendations aimed at increasing youth participation in civic life and community programs.

Commissioners will also take part in community events and projects, serve as ambassadors for city initiatives, and review proposed ordinances or programs that affect young people. In addition, the group will be tasked with developing youth-led initiatives aligned with city priorities and presenting an annual report outlining its work, recommendations, and accomplishments.

Students selected for the commission will serve one-year terms running from September through May, with the option to reapply for a second consecutive year. Meetings will be held monthly at City Hall, and members will periodically attend City Council meetings to stay engaged with ongoing discussions and decisions.

To be eligible, applicants must live in Citrus Heights, be enrolled in grades 8–12, and commit to attending monthly meetings throughout the term. Those interested can apply here.

Applications are due by June 26 at 5 p.m. A signed recommendation letter from a teacher, advisor, counselor, or coach is requested as part of the application process.

Forms are also available through the City Clerk’s Office and can be submitted by email or delivered in person to City Hall at 6360 Fountain Square Drive. For additional information, visit the city’s website.

City officials say the new commission represents an investment in the next generation of leaders, offering young residents a meaningful opportunity to shape the future of their community.
