The identity of a 66-year-old female who died Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle on San Juan Avenue in Citrus Heights has been released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
66-year-old Yelena Sotnikova was riding on a sit-down mobility scooter across San Juan Avenue when she was hit by another vehicle, police say.
Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls regarding a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle on San Juan Avenue near Greenback Lane after 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 30. Officers responded to the scene to find the individual lying in the roadway.
Sotnikova suffered significant injuries according to police and was pronounced deceased at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by law enforcement. Southbound lanes of Sylvan Road and San Juan Avenue were closed from Stock Ranch Road to Greenback Lane during the investigation.
Sotnikova’s scooter was a four-wheel sit-down mobility scooter, and it was not fast moving, which is what led to the collision, police said Monday.
In a media release, Citrus Heights Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision and the driver remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.
This is the third collision-related death of 2026, Lt. William Dunning with the Citrus Heights Police Department said Monday. Previously The Sentinel reported that a motorcyclist died after being involved in a vehicle-motorcycle collision on Van Maren Lane in April and another woman died after being involved in a solo-vehicle collision on Greenback Lane in January.
According to an annual Police Department report presented in April to the Citrus Heights City Council, there were only three collision-related deaths in all of 2025.
Anyone with additional information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department.
