Hall’s Furniture, one of Citrus Heights’ oldest, still-operating businesses, continues to thrive 80 years after having opened in 1946 by John Hall.
The business has stayed within the extended family, most recently being sold in the 90’s to current owner Mike Harper, whose great uncle was John “J.D.” Hall.
In per-incorporation days, the site of Hall’s Furniture on Mariposa Avenue between Old Auburn Road and Watson Way was in the heart of a small shopping center serving a growing community, the Citrus Heights Historical Society says.
The Hall family also once operated a grocery store adjacent to the furniture store until the 1960s. The original Citrus Heights Post Office was also once located adjacent to the furniture store. A pair of Texaco gas pumps were also located outside Hall’s, which the 58-year-old Harper recalls using to pump gas for the furniture delivery trucks while he was in high school.
Hall’s 12,000-square-foot floor space is filled with couches, recliners, tables, bed frames, and mattresses from leading brands such as Tempur-Pedic, Bassett, Lane and Simmons. The store serves customers across the regions of Sacramento and Placer Counties and also offers local delivery.
Shoppers can still see tell-tale signs of the store’s rich history, with segments of the store noticeably sectioned off, one for each different business that once made up the small strip mall. The store’s footprint has expanded to include a former dress shop and a variety store, as well as the old post office, leaving the brick archways in the interior of the space intact.
At the inside layout has shifted and expanded, the surrounding area has also grown ignificantly with the times, with housing developments and an elementary school springing up after World War II. Now, the immediate area is surrounded by busy boulevards, and residential housing and apartment complexes.
Hall’s Furniture is located at 7752 Mariposa Ave., and is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 to 4 p.m.
